What is “Simple apparatus” ？
An electrical component or combination of components of simple construction with well-defined electrical parameters that is compatible with the intrinsic safety of the circuit in which it is used. A device that will neither generate nor store more than 1.5 V, 0.1 A and 25 mW.
Examples are switches, thermocouples (TCs), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and resistance temperature devices (RTDs).
Simple apparatus should be used with certified I.S. barriers in I.S. circuits but does not require Ex certification.
IDEC’s Non-Ex switches can be used as simple apparatus in hazardous areas in combination with EB3 barrier series.

Can be used as simple apparatus in combination with the EB3C relay barrier. Also, IDEC’s E-Stop switch and safety switches can be used as machinery safety switches in combination with the EB3N safety relay barrier.

The Customer’s Problem
In many cases, users need to confirm by themselves that the combination of switches and I.S. barrier complies with standards and can be used as simple apparatus. This is because most manufacturers do not have both barriers and switches, and their information is limited to “Please use with compatible switches / barriers”.
IDEC’s Solution
As a manufacturer of both switches and barriers, IDEC issues the declaration of conformity for simple apparatus to remove user concerns that certification may be required for switches or about which combination of switches and I.S. barrier can be used.
This letter clarifies which IDEC switches can be used as simple apparatus in combination with IDEC EB3 barriers.
